He Couldn’t Pay His Doctor—So He Returned With a Rooster and a Hen as a Thank-You Gift
Sometimes, the most meaningful way to say thank you has nothing to do with money.
In July 2021, an elderly farmer named Pedro Quintana traveled from rural southern Bolivia to the city of Tarija seeking medical help for a serious urinary problem. After examining him, urologist Dr. Álvaro Ramallo Zamora determined that Pedro needed prostate surgery.
But there was one major problem: Pedro couldn't afford the operation.
A Doctor Who Chose to Help
Rather than turning Pedro away, Dr. Ramallo explained that the surgery could be covered through the Dr. José Ramallo Guillén Foundation, which had been established in memory of his late father, who was also a physician.
Knowing that he would receive the treatment he needed, Pedro left the clinic.
But his story didn't end there.
About an hour later, he returned—and this time, he wasn't carrying money.
He was carrying a rooster and a hen.
A Gift From the Heart
The elderly farmer had brought the two birds as a personal gesture of gratitude to the doctor.
For Pedro, they weren't simply farm animals. They were what he had available to give, and he wanted to show his appreciation for the help he had received.
The unexpected gift deeply moved Dr. Ramallo, who reportedly became emotional.
The chickens also brought back memories of his father and an earlier time when rural patients would sometimes thank doctors with whatever they could afford to give—including eggs, chickens, and other farm goods.
Instead of refusing Pedro's gift, Dr. Ramallo decided to keep the birds.
He even gave them names: Clotilde and Ramón.
Pedro Eventually Received His Surgery
Pedro underwent the prostate surgery successfully.
By July 28, 2021, Dr. Ramallo said that the elderly farmer was recovering well.
The rooster and hen were never really considered payment for the medical treatment. Pedro had simply wanted to express his gratitude in the only way he knew.
And perhaps that's what made his gesture so touching.
He didn't have much money, but he still wanted to give something.
Sometimes Gratitude Isn't Measured in Money
Pedro's story is a reminder that the value of a gift isn't always determined by its price.
A rooster and a hen may seem like ordinary animals, but to an elderly farmer who had just received life-changing medical assistance, they represented something much bigger: gratitude, respect, and appreciation.
Dr. Ramallo helped Pedro when he couldn't afford the treatment. Pedro, in return, gave what he could.
It was a simple exchange—but one filled with humanity.
Sometimes, the most valuable thank-you isn't the most expensive one. It's the one given sincerely.
