How We Check Viral Stories
Viral content is not automatically treated as confirmed information. When practical, we examine the available evidence and look for the earliest identifiable source of the claim.
Depending on the subject, we may compare information against original reports, official statements, credible news organizations, scientific institutions, researchers, organizations, or other relevant sources.
We also consider whether important details in a viral post may have been removed from their original context.
If reliable evidence is insufficient to establish a claim as true, we aim to describe it as unverified or unconfirmed rather than presenting it as established fact.
Fact-Check Labels
When appropriate, The Pader may use labels to communicate the status of a claim to readers.
The available evidence and reliable sources support the major claim or relevant facts presented in the article.
The claim has been reviewed against available sources and relevant evidence.
We could not independently establish the claim with sufficient reliable evidence at the time of publication.

When the exact origin of an image cannot be established, we avoid presenting an uncertain attribution as confirmed.
AI-Generated and Illustrative Images
Some article covers or visual materials may be created or enhanced using digital editing or artificial intelligence tools for illustrative purposes.
An illustrative or AI-generated image should not be interpreted as documentary evidence that a particular event actually occurred or that the people, animals, or locations depicted are the exact subjects of the story.
When the distinction is important to understanding an article, we aim to make the illustrative nature of the image clear.

We recognize that errors can occur, particularly when reporting on developing stories or information that is changing.
